About the subject

At New Road Academy we believe Technology should provide an exciting initiative experience for all students.

Design and Technology (DT) is a constantly evolving department that keeps up with the ever-changing technology used in industry, with students having access to our two Laser Cutters and 3D Printers. They also have access to our wood working machines and hand held tools including a Wood Turning Lathe, Pillar Drill, Scroll Saws and Band Facers. Students also have access to metal work machines including a Milling Machine and Centre Lathe.

Our vision within DT is that students will become independent innovate and resourceful learners. They will develop a designer’s mind set, that allows them to produce creative ideas that solve real life problems throughout a range of different specialisms including; Product Design and Resistant Materials,

Throughout both KS3 and KS4 students’ practical projects will be taught alongside relevant theory. Practical projects will encompass the iterative design process by developing their research, designing, prototyping, manufacturing and evaluation skills to solve relevant problems in a variety of contexts.

Through the learning and evaluation of the work of others, students will develop a critical understanding of our ever-evolving world and how technology influences our daily lives form past to present. In addition to this, students will gain an appreciation for developing a sustainable environment through making informed decisions about design, material and manufacture. During the Teaching and learning of Design Technology, students will acquire a range of new skills applying their knowledge of Mathematics, Science, ICT and Art.

Hospitality and catering (food technology) is one of the largest sectors in the country and provides over 3.5 million jobs. At New Road Academy, our vision for food technology is that students will become independent and creative chefs who enjoy experimenting with a range of sweet and savoury dishes.  Students have access to fully kitted kitchens that enables students to produce excellent outcomes.

Throughout both KS3 and KS4 students’ practical cooking lessons will be taught alongside relevant theory so students know where food comes from, the nutritional value of food and the impact different cooking methods have on nutrients. Students will also learn how to evaluate their practical skills and learn to develop and refine their culinary skills.

About the KS3 Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is comprised of a variety of creative and practical activities which enables the students to use the iterative design process to develop their designing and making skills and allow the students to articulate their ideas on paper and through oral presentation.

In year 7 and Year 8, students experience three separate rotations that are 12 weeks long, they are Resistant Materials, Product Design and Food Technology. The rotations include a mix of theory, drawing skills, practical lessons and evaluations. We focus on sustainability and the environmental impact throughout our lessons to help make them environmentally conscientious and to help them become global citizens who make informed decisions. In their Food Technology lessons include a mix of theory, sensory testing, practical lessons and evaluations. We focus on the eat well guide and healthy eating throughout KS3 to ensure students are aware of the nutrients required to support a healthy lifestyle.

Lessons are engaging and challenging, therefore students want to succeed as shown through their hard work and not been afraid to make mistakes. Demonstration, and an excellent range of quality resources, is a key aspect of teaching in Technology. Through regular feedback and guided practice, students master key concepts and processes through the three specialist areas.

Demonstrations and practical experience happens alongside theory lessons in each of the specialist areas so that students’ knowledge is embedded. Their knowledge is tested throughout KS3 to check for long term retention of topics. Learning the theory of key areas alongside the theory supports our students in recalling their knowledge. Key concepts are revisited over key stages as well as between lessons to practice retrieval and recall.

Students enjoy their Technology lessons in Key Stage 3, showing high engagement and appreciation particularly in their practical lessons. Progress in Key Stage 3 is improving with a high proportion of students making good progress from a range of starting points. At New Road Academy, our curriculum focuses on students’ learning, ensuring it is broad, balanced, and helps them grow as individuals and learners. We aim to give every student a positive and creative Technology experience while they are with us.

Homework at KS3, is set when required during the 12 week rotation and uses a range of strategies from completion of work to help support classwork/ practical work. They will also use retrieval practices through quizzes, questions and application of skills to help support Knowledge retention and engagement within the rotation cycle of the department. Each task is designed to enrich the learning opportunities and encourage students to work independently.

We give students the opportunity to take part in Big Ideas, a national competition. We won the regional final and the winning team went to London to present their idea in the national final where we came third in 2024.

At New Road Academy we offer a range of afterschool clubs for students including Cooking club and Green Power which are an excellent opportunity for students who are passionate about the subject.

We are running a chef of the week competition in cooking lessons where these students are rewarded with a Bake off style final to compete to be the chef of the year.

My role is constantly evolving, it is never stagnant, you never sit doing the same thing day in and day out.

About the KS4 Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

KS4 GCSE AQA Design and Technology

This course is designed to encourage students to develop an awareness of the nature and importance of Design and Technology in a rapidly changing society. Students will learn to combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, function and industrial practices, all of which are essential in the technological field. Students work on a range of products in year 9 and 10 within a range of design specialisms. Towards the end of year 10 students decide on their chosen specialism to develop further in preparation for their chosen career choice.

Hospitality and Catering KS4

Our WJEC Vocational Award in Hospitality and Catering will develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the Hospitality and Catering sector and provide them with opportunities to develop associated practical skills. It covers the hospitality and catering industry and hospitality and catering in action.

The course is broken up into two units that are taught across KS4 Lessons. Unit 1 is taught through a range of theory lessons which enables learners to gain and develop comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the hospitality and catering industry including provision, health and safety, and food safety. Unit 2 prepares our students for their NEA coursework, which starts in Year 11. This unit enables learners to develop and apply knowledge and understanding of the importance of nutrition and how to plan nutritious menus. They will learn the skills needed to prepare, cook and present dishes. They will also learn how to review their work effectively.

Lessons are engaging and challenging, therefore students want to succeed as shown through their hard work and not been afraid to make mistakes. Demonstration, and an excellent range of quality resources, is a key aspect of teaching in Technology. Through regular feedback and guided practice students master key concepts and processes in their chosen specialism.

At New Road Academy we have designed our curriculum with students’ learning at the centre. We recognise that a curriculum has to be broad, balanced and offer students opportunities to grow as individuals as well as learners. Our focus is to provide every student with a positive and creative experience of Technology whilst they’re with us at New Road Academy and one that will give them the skills to confidently go onto study within the area or have transferable skills for their next steps. The proportion of students taking Hospitality and Catering and Design and Technology as an option in KS4 is increasing each year.

Year 9 and 10 homework is set to support the progress and development of the student’s core skills and knowledge. This may be as a continuation of the work covered in lesson or an extra task that will in turn help strengthen and enhance their coursework and aid their knowledge retention and engagement.

In year 11 homework is set weekly to support the preparation for their final exam. Students will be given websites to support them and access to revision guides to support them in their revision. Students may also be set tasks that will support them with their lessons, this may be a continuation of the work covered in lesson or an extra task that will in turn help strengthen and enhance their coursework.

We have local colleges come in to promote their catering courses by offering our KS4 students cooking lessons. We are looking at getting local chefs in to talk to Hospitality and catering students.

A range of trips for students to experience real world examples of the theory they are taught across Hospitality and Catering and Design and Technology lessons.

At New Road Academy we offer a number of extra-curricular sessions after school with the Technology team to support students with their projects outside of lessons.
