Homework
Promotes students’ self-discipline and personal responsibility for learning and organisation
Homework is an integral part of education, it:
- Promotes students’ self-discipline and personal responsibility for learning and organisation.
- Reinforces work started in class, extending knowledge, and understanding.
- Gives opportunities to practise and develop skills.
- Allows parents to become involved in their child’s learning.
- Is valuable in ensuring students’ progress and raising achievement.
Amount of Homework
Students will need to learn to manage their time so that they do some homework each evening. Each department will set meaningful homework, when appropriate, for that subject.
The amount of time spent on each homework task is flexible, but within the following guidelines (as set by government): –
Per Subject Per Evening
Per subject | Frequency per subject | |
---|---|---|
Years 7, 8 | 30 - 45 min | Every 3 weeks |
Years 9, 10, and 11 | 45 - 60 min | Every 2 weeks |
Setting of homework
Homework will be set electronically and can be accessed via the parent app “my child at school” and the student app “student portal”
If you child does not have access to an electronic device the homework will be provided via a paper version
The role of parents
Parents have a vital role to play in their child’s education, and homework is an important part of this process. Parents are asked to encourage their child to allocate sufficient time to their homework.
Parents can support their child by providing a good working space at home. Students need a quiet place for study, away from the distractions of television, computer games, social networking sites and the telephone.
Parents can view the homework tasks assigned to their child using the MCAS Parent app. Parents are also able to use the app to view late homeworks for their children.
A parent who is concerned about the amount of time their child is spending on homework should contact their tutor in the first instance
