Charlton Academy was proud to host the third Learning Community Trust Secondary Mathematics Fest of the academic year, bringing together Year 7 and 8  students from across the Trust’s secondary schools for a day of collaborative challenge and competition.

The event featured three rounds of timed problem-solving activities, designed to test students’ mathematical reasoning, teamwork, and resilience under pressure. Each round concluded with the announcement of winning teams, adding a competitive edge that kept energy levels high throughout the day.

Students responded positively throughout the event, with many commenting on how enjoyable and rewarding the experience was. All the teams performed strongly across several rounds, but it was the Year 7 teams from HLC that claimed the overall win. Their two teams consistently achieved top scores, securing the top two spots in the final standings.

Staff from each school supported the event by assisting with marking and coordination.  Christine Watson from the University of Worcester attended as the event’s guest co-ordinator and praised the students for their focus and effort, noting the impressive level of engagement across all teams.

Speaking after the event, the Trust Lead for Mathematics, Manny Kelay, said:

“It was fantastic to see our students working together, thinking critically, and enjoying mathematics in a competitive setting. I’m proud of what they achieved today and look forward to running these initiatives again in the future.”

The Mathematics Fest marks an exciting step in promoting academic collaboration and enrichment across our Trust, and plans are already underway to build on its success.
